Presentation plus curriculum tie-in or hands-on fun
After an informal talk complete with show-and-tell and time for questions, we'll bring to life a story element from one of my books. The basic presentation is 45-50 minutes; subsequent class time may be needed to complete hands-on projects.

  • In larger groups or with older students, we'll discuss interesting and educational aspects of the book's setting or events, such as creating secret codes or medieval Irish society.

  • With small groups (up to two classes in the same room, with teacher support), we can enjoy a fun, hands-on project appropriate to the book we've discussed and the kids' ages. For instance, after discussing Reality Leak we might create our own secret codes for sharing secret messages with friends. After discussing The Humming of Numbers we might artistically illuminate our names or short messages.

Young writers' workshop
Let's write! We'll examine storytelling basics, play with tools that can help warm up our imaginations, and then use group and individual writing time to create, share even work on those critical revision skills when session length permits.

Writers' chat
For students and/or adults with interest in writing for publication, I'll host an informal chat about the craft, the road to publication, and resources for aspiring writers. Time permitting, we can delve into sample critiques.

Writing seminars for teachers/adults
When enough teachers, staff, or other adults are interested in writing for publication, I can bring my experience as a conference speaker, contest judge, seasoned critique provider, and professional writer to a tailored writing seminar for adults. Specific seminar focus and length negotiable.

Conference presentations
I enjoy speaking at writers' conferences and leading workshops on topics ranging from craft techniques to the influence of the subconscious on creative work. I also give professional critiques on participants' manuscripts, when part of the conference program.

Details and fees
Most details are negotiable and can be tailored for specific situations, but the following guidelines may be useful:

  • Maximum sessions per day (one location): 4

  • Maximum locations per day: 2, if logistics are feasible

  • Book sales: Autographed books make a fun keepsake. Sales are most efficiently handled in advance by a librarian or teacher. I can help with arrangements and provide a flyer for students to take home; it's often possible to get a discount that may be passed on to students or reserved as a fundraiser.

  • Daily fee: $500-$750, depending on extent of program and discounted for special circumstances, including events in my local area and pre-sale of books. Half-day or one-hour rates available; just ask!

  • Space and/or equipment requirements: Depends on event details, but may include a slide or computer projector and screen; arts and craft materials; microphone for large groups

  • Travel costs: Paid by event host when outside the greater Puget Sound area
